If you are thinking about upgrading, fitting, or getting your Fire Alarm System Serviced,it might be time to evaluate your over-all Fire Safety and consider the following:
- There is a fundamental difference between how an intruder alarm and fire alarm is used;
The intruder alarm is set and unset every day and therefore is looked at, given attention and if a fault shows, it is noticed and dealt with. The fire alarm is passive and generally unseen. It is not set and unset and if a fault occurs it can be ignored, or silenced and left.
Therefore it is vital that there is a person with responsibility for the condition of the fire alarm.
The Irish Fire Standard ; I.S.3218:2013 deals with this and specifies that a “responsible person” is appointed.
The “responsible person” is charged with daily attention, i.e looking at the panel to note any faults, weekly attention; testing the sounders and warning devices and also ensuring the system is maintained by a qualified person, generally quarterly.
General Guidelines to Fire Alarm Categories
There are 2 Different Types of Category;
LD ; Domestic Dwellings
This relates to a domestic mains powered, interlinked smoke detectors which have no central panel or control unit;
LD1 is a system which has detection in all areas including voids and attics
LD2 is a system which has detection in all circulation spaces that form part of the escape routes from the premises, and in all rooms or areas that present a high risk of fire to occupants
L; Non Domestic; Commercial, Child Care (above a certain size) Care Homes, Hotels, Healthcare, Multi – Occupancy Units
- L1 Category – Detection provided throughout the entire premises including attics & voids. This is usually required for residential care homes, Hotels, Hospitals
- L3 Category – Detection provided on all escape routes and adjoining areas
- L2/L3 Category – Detection provided on all escape routes and adjoining areas, as well as additional detection in specified high risk areas and circulation routes. This is the most common Fire Alarm category and is used in most commercial premises.
- L4 Category – Detection provided on all escape routes only. This would be used normally where a risk assessment has been carried out and this has been deemed adequate.
- L4/L2 Category – Detection provided on all escape routes and additional detection in specified high risk areas such as circulation routes.
- L3X Category– Used in multi – occupancy dwellings (flats, apartments, bedsits linked by an enclosed stairwell / corridor) This system comprises of a heat detector inside each apartment, smoke detectors on all escape routes. Usually there is a separate LD (Domestic) system in each apartment also.
These are general guidelines and do not deal with specifics such as positioning of Sounders or Manual Call Points. If you have specific queries, please call us and we would be happy to discuss your requirements
